How do I know what to eat and when?
When you receive your order for the 28-day diet food program, you’ll get a NutriSystem Meal Planner. This checkbook-sized guide outlines your meals and snacks for you and features 28 Daily Diary pages on which you can “check off” your entrees, snacks, desserts, and fresh produce and dairy servings each day as you go along. You’ll eat healthy meals and snacks often throughout the day, and your Planner will be your easy-to-follow guide.

Do I have to eat all the Food listed on the meal plan daily?
Nutrisystem encourages eating all the food servings listed on your meal plan. Your meal plan has been designed to give you all the essential nutrients needed for optimal nutrition and safe and effective weight loss.

Do I need to eat vegetables and fruit while on the program?
NutriSystem is all about healthy weight loss and learning about and maintaining a balanced diet. As part of your program, it is strongly recommended that you include a variety of fruit and vegetables for optimal health and fresh dairy servings.

Does the NutriSystem meal plan meet USDA standards for a healthy diet?
The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) released its sixth set of recommendations on eating–the Dietary Guidelines for Americans in 2005. The upshot is that there’s good news for everyone participating in the NutriSystem program—your meal plan meets and, in many cases, exceeds the government standards for healthy eating.

Further, the NutriSystem meal plans:
Contain more minor than the recommended limit of sodium intake
Featureless than 5% of their calories from trans and saturated fats, which is less than half the maximum allowed in the guidelines
I have always stressed choosing lean, low-fat, and non-fat meats

Have you heard a lot about a glycemic diet? What kind of a diet is this, and what does it mean? It is a diet with foods low in glycemic index value. Foods are ranked 1 – 100 based on their effects on blood sugar levels. Foods with a low glycemic value will slowly release sugar into the blood. It provides a steady supply of energy and a satisfying feeling of not being hungry. Thus it would help if you snacked less often.

Naturally, food with a high glycemic impact value will do the opposite of low cost. The rapid rise in blood sugar can make you feel tired and hungry within a short period. Thus eating foods high in GI value can cause you to overeat, causing weight gain.

Diets based on the GI value will encourage you to eat foods low in GI and stay away from foods high in GI value. Most of these GI diets, like many other diets, will discourage the intake of fatty foods and incredibly saturated fats. 

Foods ranked from 0 to 55 on the glycemic index have a low GI. Some foods with this rank are broccoli, cabbage, lettuce, mushrooms, onions, and red peppers. These vegetables all have a level of around 10. Cherries and grapefruits run in the ’20s. Fruits, vegetables, nuts, legumes, whole grains, lean meat, fish, and low-fat dairy are low in GI value. Any foods that rank over 70 have a high GI rank. Some of these foods you would want to avoid are red-skinned boiled potatoes, corn flakes, dates, bread stuffing, rice cakes, and rice crackers. Foods made from white flour are heavily processed and are usually high GI foods. It is only a tiny sampling of low and high foods in GI value.

What are some popular diets that encourage low GI values? Ann Collins, Nutrisystem, and Ediets all have diet plans based on the Glycemic Index. Many books help guide you on a low glycemic index diet. The GI diet claims to be a simple, healthy way to permanent weight loss without going hungry. There is a saying regarding this diet. If you can follow a traffic light, you can follow this diet. You are categorizing foods as green, yellow, and red.

This GI Diet can reduce your heart disease risk, stroke, type 2 diabetes, and other high-risk diseases. If you are concerned about your weight and health, you owe yourself to invest the time, look into this diet, and discuss it with your doctor.

Take one part innovation, two parts experimentation, mix in a bit of input from our own NutriSystem members, and you’ve got a recipe for tasty, original meals! Straight from the NutriSystem kitchens, 15 ideas for mixing it up a little when preparing your NutriSystem meals and desserts. Bon appétit!

Use the Low Fat Granola to create a fruit and yogurt parfait. Layer your favorite fresh berries in a tall parfait glass with light vanilla yogurt, granola, and berries; repeat layers.

Stir-fry a colorful combination of fresh vegetables—snow peas, julienne red or yellow peppers, mushrooms—until barely tender. Prepare the Chicken Pasta Parmesan or Chicken Primavera with Pasta as directed, and add to the stir-fried vegetables.

Top the Chocolate Pudding dessert with 2 Tbsp. Stir it directly into the pudding to lighten the texture of a fat-free Cool Whip. You can also experiment with adding a drop of flavoring extract—mint, banana, rum, almond, etc.

Melt NutriCrunch Cherry Cordial Chocolates in the microwave on low heat for about one minute. Dip fresh, whole strawberries by the stem into the melted chocolate. Place on waxed paper to harden.

Make a cheese omelet with your favorite Scrambled Egg Mix. Add water to the egg mixture and stir. Heat omelet pan, pour in the mix, and cook while stirring until no longer runny. Sprinkle with 1 oz. Grated low-fat cheese or 2 Tbsp. Grated Parmesan and folded in half. Add 2 Tbsp. Of chopped, cooked spinach, a pinch of chopped chives, or even a dash of Mrs. Dash for added flavor.

Split Banana Spice or Lemon Poppy Seed Muffins in half and spritz with I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter. Brown lightly in the toaster oven.

Top any NutriSystem pizza with your favorite sautéed or fresh vegetables or fruit. Suggestions: mushrooms, green peppers, onions, spinach, and eggplant.

Make a taco salad using the Beef Tacos entrée. Pile shredded lettuce on a salad plate, top with prepared taco filling, 1 oz. Shredded low-fat cheese, five sliced black olives, one chopped medium tomato, and sliced scallions. Top with crumbled taco shells.

Blend 1/2 sliced banana with the Chocolate Shake.

Prepare Oatmeal or Apple Cinnamon Oatmeal according to directions. Stir in 2 Tbsp. Raisins and a dash of cinnamon. Top with 4 oz—of fat-free milk.

Add 1/2 cup lightly sautéed red bell peppers to the Green Pepper Steak with Rice.

Top the Flame Broiled Beef Patty with 1 oz. Low-fat mozzarella cheese and 1/2 cup sautéed mushrooms. Serve with a toasted whole-wheat bun.

Replace your lunch salad with a medium tomato. Cut the tomato in quarters and top with Chicken Salad or Tuna Salad. Serve with whole-wheat or rye Melba toast.

Chill the Vegetarian Pasta Salad and combine it with 2 oz. Cooked shrimp or 1 oz. Diced chicken. Serve over a bed of greens.

Cut bell pepper in half lengthwise and remove the seeds. Fill each half with the Zesty Cajun Chicken and Sausage with Wild Rice. Place on a plate and cover with plastic wrap; microwave until peppers are tender.

Healthy eating and nutrition for the elderly are significantly impacted by several factors, including changing body composition. The body will lose bone and muscle during the later years of life and gain fat because the hormones aren’t very active anymore.

Many factors hinder an older adult’s health.
The information below will help you lead a healthy life – no matter how old you may be.

1. Water: Water in the body decreases with age, so many older folks will quickly become dehydrated. Sometimes they won’t feel thirsty, while other times, it’s too much work to pour a glass of water. With this in mind, it’s recommended that they drink at least 1 ounce of water for every 2.2 pounds of weight.

2. Protein: At this stage in life, protein is essential.
Protein is needed to support a healthy immune system and prevent muscle wasting. Since energy needs are more minor, older folks should eat high-quality protein such as eggs, lean meats, poultry, and fish.

3. Carbs and fiber: Carbohydrates are the primary energy source for the entire body. You can find carbs in bread, cereals, pasta, and other grain products. A diet that’s high in fiber and water will help prevent constipation.

4. Fat: Fat intake for the elderly should be limited, not eliminated. You can limit fat by choosing lean meats, low-fat dairy products, and food preparation methods that don’t include frying.

5. Iron: For the elderly, iron deficiency can be seen in those who aren’t eating much. Good sources of iron include lean red meats or breakfast cereals.

6. Zinc: Zinc intake usually is with the elderly, and to make matters worse, it’s not absorbed very well either. Meat, poultry, and fish should be a part of your diet to help you meet zinc requirements.

7. Calcium: Calcium is one ingredient that most elderly folks
only aren’t getting enough of. Most believe that milk upsets their stomach, so that they will avoid it. They should be getting around 1,500 mg of calcium a day, and nonfat powdered milk can be used in recipes as a substitute for milk. Other foods such as yogurt, low-fat cheese, and broccoli can also help you meet calcium requirements.

8. Vitamin B12: To absorb the benefits of B12, the
the stomach must produce an intrinsic factor. Most older adults suffer from a deficiency in B12 because they have a condition known as atrophic gastritis. This condition causes stomach inflammation, bacterial overgrowth, and intrinsic factor. Without the intrinsic factor, this vitamin can be absorbed.

Each of the above nutrients is needed to keep an aging body in good health. Elderly individuals should try to stay active and strive for a well-balanced diet. Even though the old body isn’t the same as it used to be, proper care and the right nutrients can help the elderly enjoy a healthy and long life.

I grew up on a farm in Southeast Iowa. We raised dairy cattle, beef cattle, hogs, and chickens and grew most of our fruits and vegetables. Dad also grew wheat, oats, corn, and beans. Mom canned a lot and froze a lot. We only went to town once a week or sometimes only once every two weeks. Mom would buy staples like sugar, flour, and seasonings at the grocery store. I would take the money I had to spend, go to the dime store, buy a candy bag, sit in the park, and eat it all. I looked forward to buying my bag of candy.

I was slim during my childhood (even though one of my favorite meals was fried chicken with mashed potatoes and gravy). In the summer, we did eat lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, including tomatoes from the garden, and in the winter, we ate a lot of canned tomatoes that mom thickened with flour. Lard from butchered hogs was used in cooking, and we made our butter and then later bought it from the creamery we sold our cream to. So, as you can see, I grew up eating differently than many people do now.

Hi, I’m Jean (“grannyroots” on the NutriSystem boards), a 66-year-old former eighth-grade science teacher and stay-at-home mom. I have been married to my husband Richard for 40 years and have two daughters and two grandsons. I love being outside in my yard, flower gardening, and taking digital pictures of the birds and flowers in my yard. I am actively involved in my church and am currently writing a book about it, and I run my website. This is my weight-loss story.

As a child and teenager, I was of average weight. I did not develop a weight problem until my daughters had 20 pounds to lose. The program I used to lose that weight taught me to think of what you should not eat as”illegal.” That wasn’t a good idea. After I had lost the weight and I could eat the”illegal” foods, I overate them and ballooned up to 60 pounds overweight. Worse, I developed a craving for sweets. I would call myself a sugarholic. By the end of 2004, I weighed my heaviest ever—239 lbs. (I’m 5’4″).

Worse, I started developing health issues, which were partly due to my weight. I had two knee replacements five years ago; I am sure being 90+ pounds overweight increased my problems with my knees. Then in February 2005, I discovered that I had a fatty liver and was on the verge of a liver problem called NASH (Non-Alcoholic Steatohepatitis).

Plus, my husband Richard was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease at around the same time, so I knew I had to be healthy to take care of him when he got worse. As you can see, I had many important reasons why I needed to get the weight off.

That’s when I started NutriSystem—the only weight loss plan that worked for me. It took me 16 months, and in May of 2006, I reached my goal of 93 lbs.* lost.

I found some things challenging along the way: getting all my vegetables in, being prepared when I ate out, and handling the times I really wanted to binge (and maybe did). But the program made it more accessible. Having food that you could take with you and preparing the food quickly was beautiful. I usually never leave the house to go shopping or to a meeting without at least some of these items: yogurt, a NutriSystem dessert, fruit, and water. (I usually eat something every couple of hours as I have trouble with blood sugar dropping.) I also use the bulletin board, read the Daily Dose, and like to read the profiles.

My family has been very supportive, too. My daughter and grandsons have sent me notes of encouragement from time to time like”Great job” or”We are proud of you.” At Easter, the most recent was when my oldest grandson walked into the house and handed me a giant rabbit and balloon congratulating me on my weight loss.

It was all so worth it, as it is pretty rewarding to look at myself in the mirror and like what I see—and feel much better about myself. Also, I like the positive comments I get and being treated nicer by the people I meet. When you are overweight and middle-aged, you are not always treated well. But when you are at your average weight and looking more attractive, you receive a lot more respect. People treat you better and are more likely to treat you as an intelligent human being. For example, when I’m out buying clothes and tell the clerks I have lost 93 pounds*, they are surprised, and then I usually get asked a lot of questions about NutriSystem.

More importantly, my health is much better now. At my last checkup with the liver specialist, I was told that if I maintained my weight loss, I would not be at risk anymore for NASH, but the risk would return if I put the weight back on.

In addition, it’s much easier for me to bend over to work in my flowerbeds. Since I can no longer get down on my knees due to my knee replacements, I must bend over to the garden. Two years ago, I would have had to quit after about twenty minutes, go in the house and lie down because my lower back would hurt so badly. Now I can bend over much better without my lower back hurting and, when needed, can even get on the ground. Best of all, I know that as long as I maintain my weight loss, I will stay healthy and be able to remain active for a much longer time. My flower garden beckons!

I’ve also had some funny experiences because of my weight loss. I’ve been asked several times if I have had plastic surgery to get rid of the excess flab around the middle, which makes me smile. Also, I talked to a relative of my husband’s who had not seen me in two years, and she kept commenting on my new hairstyle. She kept looking at me as if she was trying to figure out what was different. After about the third compliment on my hair, I shared I had lost 93 pounds* since she last saw me. Her reply: “I knew something was different!”

I’ve learned a lot from NutriSystem, which will help me maintain my weight loss. I try to eat right, eat smaller portions, and exercise more. If I have a bad day or two, I have learned to get back to eating right as quickly as possible. I walk more to increase my activity level, and I am doing stomach-toning exercises (and I should have started them sooner). I am also eating different foods now, and I have learned that if you restrict how much you eat of the food you crave, you will get over the craving and still not fall off the wagon.

My best advice to others would be that it may be too big of a challenge if you think too far ahead, but taking one day at a time is not. Also, enter the program with the idea that you will make some permanent changes in your eating habits and are not just getting the weight off and then planning to go back to your old eating habits. My journey was sixteen months, and if you take it one day at a time, you will make it.

Though the course of destiny can never be averted yet, prevention should never be ignored. There are some medicines that women should take after menopause to minimize the risk factor.

5. Alzheimer’s disease and Dementia are even threatening for women. The former is a fall in certain cognitive brain functions. It is a type of dementia. Dementia impedes an individual’s intellectual functioning and capability to work. These diseases primarily affect women in the sixties and above that. Such women gradually become forgetful and incompetent in doing skillful work. As soon as some of these symptoms are evident, the doctor should be consulted without delay. Drugs at an early stage might stop the situation from worsening.

6. Avoid stress. Stress is as harmful as any other contagious disease. Don’t stoop to drugs, so-called stress busters. Consult a psychiatrist if conditions run out of control.

This creative recipe comes from NutriSystem member Robin in St. Louis, Missouri. She says, “I was craving hot and spicy buffalo wings, so I came up with this NutriSystem-friendly version. It satisfied my craving and was very filling.”

Counts as dinner entrée + 1 fat serving + free foods

Ingredients

  • 1 oz. whole-wheat elbow noodles (1/4 cup dry noodles)
  • 1 NutriSystem Chicken Patty
  • 1/4 cup diced celery
  • 1 Tablespoon fat-free mayo
  • 2 Tablespoons low-fat blue cheese salad dressing
  • 1-2 teaspoons hot wing sauce, to taste
  • Two slices of tomato, cubed
  • dash of celery seed

Directions

  1. Cook pasta according to package; rinse in cold water until pasta is cooled, then drain well.
  2. Cut NutriSystem chicken patty into small cubes and stir into noodles.
  3. Add remaining ingredients and stir well.
  4. Refrigerate a half hour before serving.

What is Type 1 Diabetes? This type of diabetes was previously known as juvenile diabetes and is typically diagnosed in children and young adults. The body does not produce insulin. What is insulin? The answer is fatigue, blurred vision, thirst, and excessive urination. Do you think you may have diabetes? Check with your doctor. With type II diabetes, minor weight loss can significantly improve your blood glucose levels.

So remember, if you have diabetes, please be under the doctor’s care. Watch what you eat. Limit your sweets, fats, and alcohol.
