Does the NutriSystem meal plan meet USDA standards for a healthy diet?
The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) released its sixth set of recommendations on eating–the Dietary Guidelines for Americans in 2005. Further, the NutriSystem meal plans:
Contain more minor than the recommended limit of sodium intake

Have you heard a lot about a glycemic diet? What kind of a diet is this, and what does it mean? It is a diet with foods low in glycemic index value. Foods are ranked 1 – 100 based on their effects on blood sugar levels. Foods with a low glycemic value will slowly release sugar into the blood. It provides a steady supply of energy and a satisfying feeling of not being hungry. Thus it would help if you snacked less often.

Naturally, food with a high glycemic impact value will do the opposite of low cost. The rapid rise in blood sugar can make you feel tired and hungry within a short period. Thus eating foods high in GI value can cause you to overeat, causing weight gain.

Diets based on the GI value will encourage you to eat foods low in GI and stay away from foods high in GI value. Most of these GI diets, like many other diets, will discourage the intake of fatty foods and incredibly saturated fats. 

Foods ranked from 0 to 55 on the glycemic index have a low GI. Some foods with this rank are broccoli, cabbage, lettuce, mushrooms, onions, and red peppers. These vegetables all have a level of around 10. Cherries and grapefruits run in the ’20s. Fruits, vegetables, nuts, legumes, whole grains, lean meat, fish, and low-fat dairy are low in GI value. Any foods that rank over 70 have a high GI rank. Some of these foods you would want to avoid are red-skinned boiled potatoes, corn flakes, dates, bread stuffing, rice cakes, and rice crackers. Foods made from white flour are heavily processed and are usually high GI foods. It is only a tiny sampling of low and high foods in GI value.

What are some popular diets that encourage low GI values? Ann Collins, Nutrisystem, and Ediets all have diet plans based on the Glycemic Index. Many books help guide you on a low glycemic index diet. The GI diet claims to be a simple, healthy way to permanent weight loss without going hungry. There is a saying regarding this diet. If you can follow a traffic light, you can follow this diet. You are categorizing foods as green, yellow, and red.

This GI Diet can reduce your heart disease risk, stroke, type 2 diabetes, and other high-risk diseases. If you are concerned about your weight and health, you owe yourself to invest the time, look into this diet, and discuss it with your doctor.

Straight from the NutriSystem kitchens, 15 ideas for mixing it up a little when preparing your NutriSystem meals and desserts. Bon appétit!

Use the Low Fat Granola to create a fruit and yogurt parfait. Layer your favorite fresh berries in a tall parfait glass with light vanilla yogurt, granola, and berries; repeat layers.

Stir-fry a colorful combination of fresh vegetables—snow peas, julienne red or yellow peppers, mushrooms—until barely tender. Prepare the Chicken Pasta Parmesan or Chicken Primavera with Pasta as directed, and add to the stir-fried vegetables.

Top the Chocolate Pudding dessert with 2 Tbsp. Stir it directly into the pudding to lighten the texture of a fat-free Cool Whip. You can also experiment with adding a drop of flavoring extract—mint, banana, rum, almond, etc.

Melt NutriCrunch Cherry Cordial Chocolates in the microwave on low heat for about one minute. Dip fresh, whole strawberries by the stem into the melted chocolate. Place on waxed paper to harden.

Make a cheese omelet with your favorite Scrambled Egg Mix. Add water to the egg mixture and stir. Heat omelet pan, pour in the mix, and cook while stirring until no longer runny. Sprinkle with 1 oz. Grated low-fat cheese or 2 Tbsp. Grated Parmesan and folded in half. Add 2 Tbsp. Of chopped, cooked spinach, a pinch of chopped chives, or even a dash of Mrs. Dash for added flavor.

Split Banana Spice or Lemon Poppy Seed Muffins in half and spritz with I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter. Brown lightly in the toaster oven.

Top any NutriSystem pizza with your favorite sautéed or fresh vegetables or fruit. Suggestions: mushrooms, green peppers, onions, spinach, and eggplant.

Make a taco salad using the Beef Tacos entrée. Pile shredded lettuce on a salad plate, top with prepared taco filling, 1 oz. Shredded low-fat cheese, five sliced black olives, one chopped medium tomato, and sliced scallions. Top with crumbled taco shells.

Blend 1/2 sliced banana with the Chocolate Shake.

Prepare Oatmeal or Apple Cinnamon Oatmeal according to directions. Stir in 2 Tbsp. Raisins and a dash of cinnamon. Top with 4 oz—of fat-free milk.

Add 1/2 cup lightly sautéed red bell peppers to the Green Pepper Steak with Rice.

Top the Flame Broiled Beef Patty with 1 oz. Low-fat mozzarella cheese and 1/2 cup sautéed mushrooms. Serve with a toasted whole-wheat bun.

Replace your lunch salad with a medium tomato. Cut the tomato in quarters and top with Chicken Salad or Tuna Salad. Serve with whole-wheat or rye Melba toast.

Chill the Vegetarian Pasta Salad and combine it with 2 oz. Cooked shrimp or 1 oz. Diced chicken. Serve over a bed of greens.

Cut bell pepper in half lengthwise and remove the seeds. Fill each half with the Zesty Cajun Chicken and Sausage with Wild Rice. Place on a plate and cover with plastic wrap; microwave until peppers are tender.
