Nutrisystem Dan Marino Contest
There were 11 winners. Ten winners each won an authentic Dan Marino football jersey and a football autographed by Dan himself.
Below is part of an interview with the grand prize winner who won a fabulous all-expenses-paid trip for two to the Big Game on February 4th in Miami AND the opportunity to meet with Dan himself? Ken J. who lost 86 lbs. and, with his wife Connie, were treated to the trip of a lifetime!
Interview with a Winner
NutriSystem caught up with Ken after his whirlwind weekend to discuss meeting Dan, attending the Bears-Colts game, and living lighter.
NS: What was your reaction to winning the Lose to Win promotion?
Ken: To tell you the truth, I was speechless, although I'm sure I probably repeated "I can't believe this! This is awesome!" over and over a couple of dozen times. I had to call NutriSystem back to get more of the details after I called my wife and caught my breath.
NS: What was it like meeting Dan Marino in person?
Ken: Well, on Friday we attended a party at Nikki Beach, which is an exclusive club on South Beach. The party was hosted by Dan, and it's where we met him and chatted with him. Dan Marino is a very easy person to talk to. We talked about Rochester [the area where Ken and Connie live] and how it is a great Italian town and how well we both did on NutriSystem. I mentioned how great it must be to have the Super Bowl in Miami, at the stadium where he played the majority of his career. He agreed it was great, except it made him extremely busy! We posed for quite a few photos, too. It all seemed to pass too quickly—but it was certainly an experience I won't ever forget!
One thing that sticks in my mind, too, is that he seemed genuinely concerned that Connie and I were having a good time. I'm thinking, here I am at an exclusive night club, meeting one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time. Of course I'm having the time of my life!
NS: Did you enjoy the game despite the weather?
Ken: You bet. On Sunday, Connie and I found some raincoats and headed to the game about 1 p.m. We went in and caught part of the pregame telecast live from the NFL Experience. We bought some souvenirs and found our seats. Being a Steelers fan, I was planning on rooting for the Colts, but we were sitting with a bunch of Bears fans. So I decided it would be safer to cheer all the good plays, regardless which side they came from!
The Super Bowl is an event that, regardless of the teams, is an experience that every football fan should see once in their lifetime. The pregame, the famous people and all the ceremony that is part of the experience is all worth it. The rain was a distraction, but for a chance to see another Super Bowl, I would sit through the rain every time!
NS: How about the rest of your trip to Miami?
Ken: Miami is a great city and South Beach is awesome, especially for a people watcher like me. Saturday, we met up with folks from NutriSystem at a private party on South Beach. It was a very nice affair and where I got to meet Jim Stuckey and his wife. Jim, like Dan, was a very easy person to talk to. We talked about how well we both have done losing weight with NutriSystem and how much fun Connie and I were having in Miami. Afterward, Connie and I took a walk down Ocean Drive.
NS: So, did losing the weight make it easier for you to enjoy yourself in Miami, then?
Ken: This is probably the easiest question for me to answer. After losing the weight, everything is easier! Obviously meeting Dan Marino and Jim Stuckey, and going to the game made for an extremely unforgettable trip. But I knew we would have some down time, too—not to mention, we had decided to extend our stay in Florida by another week. So I was really looking forward to using the extra time to get outside for a run. While we were in Florida I was able to run over 25 miles! I hated to come home to the treadmill. Fortunately, I am participating in my first triathlon in June and have registered for the Chicago Marathon in October.
Plus, I used to hate flying. I had always thought it was a fear of flying, but since losing the weight, I realized that it had nothing to do with flying—it had to do with being squeezed into a seat surrounded by people. I guess maybe you could call it claustrophobia, but whatever it was, flying is much more pleasant now that I'm thinner.
All of this is something I couldn't even comprehend a year ago. I started NutriSystem the day after the Super Bowl last year. If someone had said then, while I was watching my Steelers win the big game, that a year from now I would have run in five 5Ks and a 10K, and would be registered for a triathlon and a marathon—let alone going to the Super Bowl, meeting Dan Marino and being a part of Dan's team—I would have suggested drug testing. The discipline that I have learned from the NutriSystem plan is incredible.
NS: Any final words?
Ken: Connie and I are extremely grateful for the trip and every thing that went along with it. But more importantly, I thank NutriSystem for showing me how to lead a healthy lifestyle—this is a lesson that will last a lifetime!
