Nutrition For The Elderly
Author: Jenny Gill

Healthy eating and nutrition for the elderly is greatly impacted by several factors, one of them being a change in body composition. During the later years in life, the body will lose bone and muscle and gain fat because the hormones aren’t very active anymore.

There are many factors which hinder an elderly person’s health.
The information below will help you to lead a healthy life – no matter how old you may be.

1. Water: Water in the body decreases with age, so many older
folks will become dehydrated very easily. Sometimes they won’t feel thirsty, while other times it’s too much work to pour a glass of water. With this in mind, it’s recommended that they drink at least 1 ounce of water for every 2.2 pounds of weight.

2. Protein: At this stage in life, protein is very important.
Protein is needed to support a healthy immune system and prevent the wasting of muscle. Since energy needs are less, older folks should eat high quality protein such as eggs, lean meats, poultry, and fish.

3. Carbs and fiber: Carbohydrates are the main source of energy
for the entire body. You can find carbs in bread, cereals, pasta, and other grain products. A diet that’s high in fiber and water will help to prevent constipation as well.

4. Fat: Fat intake for the elderly should be limited, not
eliminated. You can limit fat by choosing lean meats, low fat dairy products, and food preparation methods that don’t include frying.

5. Iron: For the elderly, iron deficiency can be seen with those
who aren’t eating much. Good sources for iron include lean red meats or breakfast cereals.

6. Zinc: Zinc intake is normally with the elderly, and to make
matters worse, it’s not absorbed very well either. Meat, poultry, and fish should be a part of your diet to help you meet the requirements for zinc.

7. Calcium: Calcium is one ingredient that most elderly folks
simply aren’t getting enough of. Most believe that milk upsets their stomach, and therefore they will avoid it. They should be getting around 1,500 mg of calcium a day, and nonfat powdered milk can be used in recipes as a substitute for milk. Other foods such as yogurt, low fat cheese, and broccoli can also help you meet the requirements for calcium.

8. Vitamin B12: In order to absorb the benefits of B12, the
intrinsic factor must be produced by the stomach. Most elderly people suffer from a deficiency in B12 because they have a condition known as atrophic gastritis. This condition causes inflammation of the stomach, bacterial overgrowth, and the intrinsic factor. Without the intrinsic factor, this vitamin can be absorbed.

Each one of the above nutrients is needed to keep an aged body in good health. Elderly individuals should try to stay active and strive for a well balanced diet. Even though the aged body isn’t the same as it used to be, proper care and the right nutrients can help the elderly enjoy a healthy and long life.

Take A Produce Stand
7 tricks to getting more fruit & vegetables into your diet
by Nutrisystem Staff – Newsletter Writers

These days, it’s tough to get through a magazine or watch a TV news program without seeing something about the importance of a healthy diet—one complete with plenty of fruits and vegetables. Study after study is making the link between diets high in fruits and vegetables, and lower incidences of many ailments, and even the recent nutritional guidelines set forth by the U.S. Department of Agriculture recommend, on average, two cups of fruit and 2½ cups of vegetables per day for those on an average 2000-calorie diet.

It seems there’s an unending stream of reasons to get more greens—and oranges, and yellows, and reds—into our diet. But sometimes, all the research in the world still isn’t enough to get the broccoli onto our plates. Lack of familiarity with the differing varieties, tastes, and preparation methods for produce can turn us away. If we haven’t tasted it before, or aren’t quite sure how to cook it, it just doesn’t make it into our grocery cart. Or, even if it does, we still fall into a rut of eating the same one or two items that we’re familiar with. But there’s so much more just waiting to be had!

When it comes to your choices in the produce aisle, think about mixing it up a little. Expand your options and uncover some new things to eat. With a little know-how, and some gumption to ask around, your menu can become as colorful as the local farmer’s market.

Try some of these ideas for “produce”-ing a well-rounded diet:

1. Take your time in the produce aisle.
Next time you’re at the grocery store, instead of whizzing through the produce aisle grabbing one bag of baby carrots, stop for a few minutes and look around. Head toward those leafy things you’ve never noticed before, or stop in front of the organic herb section. Nowadays even the smallest stores have a variety of offerings, complete with point-of-purchase nutrition labels and sometimes even recipe or cooking instructions nearby. Look for these things. And if you don’t see them, ask for the produce manager. She’s familiar with her stock and can offer a whole host of suggestions, from flavor and taste recommendations, to cooking and prep ideas. Also, don’t be afraid to ask for a sample. Many stores willingly offer samples and will even cut up a piece for you to taste on the spot—you just have to ask.

2. Go to the organic or health food grocery store in town.
You’ve probably passed by it at one time or another—that health food grocery store in the strip mall by your house. Some Saturday morning, why not stop by? You may be amazed not only at the foods you’ll find, but also by the ideas and information you can gather there. Again, poke around and don’t be afraid to ask questions. At these stores, you may even find a class going on, or a list of ones for which you can sign up, to teach you everything from how to grow fruit and vegetables, to unique ways to cook and serve them up.

3. Head to your local bookstore.
If grocery stores aren’t your resource of choice, why not head to the local bookstore or library and do a little research on not-so-common fruit and vegetables? Or log on to the web and hunt down some great cookbooks or fruit and veggie guidebooks— there are plenty to choose from. Hone up on those items you see in the produce aisle but don’t recognize, and learn just how to prepare them for your family. Consider it a treasure hunt of sorts…as you uncover more about produce, you may just discover one of your all-time treasured and favorite foods.

4. Try new things when dining out.
Why not order something different, like a vegetarian dish, the next time you’re out? Go for that food on the menu that has ingredients and vegetables you just can’t pronounce, and see how the best chefs serve it up. It may seem like a risk, but remember, nothing ventured, nothing gained!

5. Check out the local farmer’s market.
When it comes to fruits and vegetables, fresh is best, so nothing beats your local farmer’s market or local farm or apple orchard. Whether it’s summertime tomatoes and strawberries, or squash and apples in the fall, the local Saturday morning farmer’s market has great things. Buying what’s in season throughout the year will also assure that your diet gets great variety, month after month.

6. Try fresh, frozen, and even canned.
Although fresh is best, sometimes fresh isn’t, well, really “fresh.” At some grocery chains, the “fresh” produce has often been picked weeks ago, and been on the road or sitting in distribution centers many days before you see it. Sometimes, if you can’t find locally grown produce in your stores, frozen and canned options are good alternatives. Contrary to popular belief, many canned options contain equal nutritional value as their fresh counterparts, and sometimes canning even makes the product’s nutrients easier to absorb. You just need to read the label carefully and watch the sodium content of canned items. Also, consider not rinsing or draining their liquid—the brine can contain many valuable vitamins and minerals and should be used in recipes and for serving. Frozen vegetables are also a great choice, and come in very handy in the kitchen. Ready to use at any time, frozen produce is usually processed within hours of harvest, locking in key nutrients until you’re ready to unlock them.

7. Mix it up.
Variety doesn’t just apply to what you buy; it’s also important when it comes to preparing your fruits and veggies. Get creative. There’s really not much you can do to harm produce, besides maybe overcooking it a little, and even then, it’s still edible. Combine, marinate, slice, dice and chop to come up with your own unique ways to serve it up. Grill, broil, microwave, or steam and see what you can create. Slice up some eggplant and throw it on the grill; stir-fry a frozen bag of oriental vegetables in three minutes flat; finely chop some sprouts or parsley and add it to your favorite NS dinner entrée—the possibilities are endless.

The key to getting your fruit and vegetable servings in really lies in being open to trying new things, and resolute about shopping and keeping fresh produce on hand at home. So take a stand today—a fruit and vegetable one—and commit to giving your body exactly what it deserves (and may actually come to love) all year round.

A Variety of Vitamins
When it comes to fruit and vegetables, all varieties are not created equal. Some have a good amount of Vitamin A; others boost your Vitamin C levels; still others are a great source of fiber. So when you’re choosing produce to complete your meal plan, it’s important to get a wide variety.

Check the chart below and think about whether you’re getting a good balance in your diet.

Why Vegetable Juicing is So Good for You?
Author: Caroline White

It’s no secret that vegetables are good for you, so it stands to reason that vegetable juicing is one of the best things you can do for good health. Vegetable juicing provides your body with a very concentrated source of nutrients and enzymes, particularly when organic vegetables are used.

It also helps to detoxify your body and boost the immune system with high doses of vitamins and minerals that are easy to absorb. In order to get the most benefit from eating vegetables, it is best to eat them raw. Of course, it can be difficult to eat large quantities of raw vegetables, but drinking several glasses of vegetable juice daily is relatively easy. Veggies are generally lower in sugar and higher in nutrients and enzymes than fruits, so vegetable juicing is an especially good way to nourish the body especially when you are sick.

One of the most important results of giving your cells a healthy dose of vegetable juice is that it will help to maintain the pH balance of your body. An optimum pH level is essential for maintaining good health. The pH scale ranges from 1 to 14 with a measure of 1 being extremely acidic and a measure of 14 being extremely alkaline.

Ideal pH Level
The reason pH (or potential hydrogen) is important is that too often our cells become too acidic. The more acidic the cells are, the less able they are to transport oxygen throughout the body. In this regard, acid is toxic to the body’s cells. The ideal pH level is slightly alkaline, between 7 and 7.5.

Unfortunately, the environment tends to contribute too much acid, making it difficult to maintain a healthy pH balance without a concerted effort to include more alkaline foods like vegetable juices in the diet.

Enzymes for Enhanced Digestion
As mentioned, vegetable juicing also provides a concentrated source of enzymes to aid digestion. Proper digestion is just as important as nutrient concentration, since undigested nutrients cannot be utilized by the body. Because the typical diet includes foods that are difficult for the body to digest, many people do not have enough digestive enzymes to break down foods and utilize nutrients.

But the good news is that with a few vegetable juice drinks a day, digestive enzymes can easily be replenished.

There is another very important advantage of juicing and, which helps you get the most out of what you eat thus having a positive effect on your overall health. Stock Market Trading
Author: Sandro Azzopardi

The stock market offers various opportunities for trading. Apart from the main securities, which one can trade on various exchanges like the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq, there are other forms of trading like forex trading, currency trading and ‘contracts for difference’ also known as CFDs.

Stock market trading normally involves opening a trade by going ‘Long’ (buying) or going ‘Short’ (selling). The later has been possible through the last few years. One can today ‘sell’ a stock with the aspiration that the stock goes down and buy it cheaper at a later time, thus making profit as a result of the diminishing of the stock value.

Greed and Fear Stock market trading can be very profitable but if not mastered correctly can lead to heavy losses and the loss of ones own capital. Various psychological factors can affect the way one trades. The most predominant ones are ‘greed’ and ‘fear’. Greed kicks in when your system directs you to exit a trade but rather than exiting, one remains in the trade with the hope of closing the trade at a better price. On the other hand, fear is also a very dangerous factor which can lead to exiting trades when the time is not right, or exiting trades too early.

The best way to keep these feelings away is only one – follow your system vigorously. In order to fully trust a system, it would first need to go through a lot of testing in order to seed in one’s mind the thought that the system works and is completely reliable. It is only when one is convinced of this that when the feelings of ‘greed’ and ‘fear’ rise, they are controlled and ignored.

CFD Trading One very interesting way of trading is CFDs (contracts for difference). Rather than buying and selling the actual shares, one would enter into a contract with a broker to buy or sell a particular share at an agreed price. The price would still be the market price at the current time, and the speed of transactions is similar to the speed of actually trading the shares, i.e. a few seconds. One of the advantages of CFDs is ‘trading on margin’. Some brokers offer very competitive margins where, for example, with a capital of $20,000, one could trade shares for a total of $100,000. This can be very dangerous and is only advised to the professional market players.

Technical Analysis Hundreds of technical tools exist for traders. Various software systems can display a stock’s chart in real time, enabling you to draw trending and trading lines, include calculations like moving averages and ratios, and some can even predict the price based on a combination of factors and previous training and testing cycles.

Charts Charts are a must for most stock traders. A chart tells the story much more than words do. By looking at a chart, a professional trader can diagnose the condition of a particular stock, just like a doctor does with his patient. Adding some analysis tools to a chart can further help in understanding what is going on with a particular stock.

On charts one can determine whether a stock is overbought or oversold, whether a stock is reaching a support or resistance level, is heavily in demand and short of supply or vice versa.

As a result of these factors and many others which one can include in a system, a decision to buy, sell or exit trades can be taken.

Stock market trading is a high return job for those who are serious about it. Various methods exist and some degree of research is required before one can start trading for a living.

Nutrisystem Works For Men

Rx for Weight Loss Success
Father of 3 loses 60 lbs.*, gains family time

Being a pharmacist, I really enjoy people and helping them to live better lives. So I have a great interest in health and nutrition, especially as they relate to chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease and cancer. I also enjoy biking, running, sports of all types (especially football and baseball), and family activities such as swimming, skiing and badminton.

father success story Father Loses Weight Nutrisystem Men

But that wasn’t always the case.

I have struggled with weight as long as I can remember. In grade school, I was always the “husky” one. Thank goodness I was always a bit athletic or things would have been a lot worse. I must have been on 50 diets as a teenager. Nothing worked long-term. This really did a number on my self-confidence. After college, I began to gain weight more rapidly because my lifestyle became more sedentary because I was working seven 12-hour days per week—not a lot of fun. This didn’t leave me a lot of time for exercise, and eating on the job was just whatever and whenever: nothing good and always too fast. I tried every fad diet along the way, but nothing lead to long-term success or happiness.

Being heavy took quite an emotional toll on me. Continued diet failures only lead to more frustration, denial and dislike for myself. And not being able to do the things with my kids that I wanted to do at age 25 or 30 was quite devastating. It was just too painful and taxing to play any type of outside sports with them. I was content to always say, “Let’s just watch a movie.” It was disappointing to them, devastating to me.

Finally, after going to the doctor for the “I just don’t feel right” checkup and being told that my cholesterol was dangerously high and my blood pressure was in the red zone, and that if I didn’t change my ways I would most likely become diabetic and be a good candidate for an early heart attack or stroke, I decided to educate myself and lose the weight. (As you can tell, health care practitioners do not always make the best patients.) Plus, as a pharmacist, I preached the right things to my patients every day, but I was not living by the same message. I had to stop and call myself a hypocrite. It was time to change.

Hi, I’m Mark, a 37-year-old husband and father living in Texas. I’ve been married to my wonderful wife Allyson for 16½ years, and I have 3 kids (Hunter, 15, Margaux, 10, and Layla, 9 months). This is my weight-loss story.

I did the research, and NutriSystem was the easiest and most practical solution for me. The cost was in line with what I wanted to spend, and the other programs of this sort seemed to cater only to women. Plus, the program fits perfectly in my lifestyle, especially the convenience of the meals. Being able to pop a lunch or dinner in the microwave and add a few simple side dishes makes this so simple to follow and easy stick to.

I like everything about the NutriSystem program, but especially the food and the website. The foods are wonderful (I especially like the Tender Beef with Vegetables, Minestrone Soup, Chicken Cacciatore, Tacos, Cheese Pizza, and Sloppy Joes), and the website is a great source for information and encouragement. I love to read everyone’s comments on the bulletin boards. I got a lot of great ideas and received a ton of inspiration from that. All in all, the program worked great for me: I’ve lost 60 lbs.* so far!

The results have literally been life-changing for not only me, but for my family and for all the patients that I come in contact with. In fact, not a day goes by that I don’t get a comment from someone about how much better I look and how happy they are for me. And my family has been a tremendous support to me. Allyson even enrolled in the NutriSystem program to support me, and to lose the last little baby fat from her most recent pregnancy. She was able to lose 15 pounds*! We are also applying the same healthy principles to our kids’ food choices and exercise routines. They have adapted to our new, healthy eating and exercise lifestyle with very few complaints at all. What a difference it has made in them, especially in my son Hunter.

And as I mentioned earlier, I love outdoor activities, so a whole new world has opened up for me. In my late 20′s, any outdoor activity was incredibly difficult. Baseball, basketball and biking were out of the question and any activity was uncomfortable. Today, I can compete (at least in my mind) with my 15-year-old son, I can ride my bicycle 100 miles at a time, and I can run a 5K in under 27 minutes. I am able to compete in sports again, and can do things with my kids without being miserable all the time. It has added a whole new dimension to our lives. As I said, a whole new world. I could not have imagined this 10 years ago.

The most challenging part of my weight-loss journey was getting started. I wish I would have done this years ago and that it would not have taken a scare at the doctor’s office to shock me into reality. And, in addition to the support of my family and friends, watching others around me change their lifestyles because of what I have done is extremely rewarding. Through my success, I have motivated several co-workers and many friends to give NutriSystem a try. Many of them are having great results.

At this point, I am full of life. I am living life to its ultimate potential. I feel as if I can do anything that I want or be anything that I want to be. If nothing else, I have set an example for my family, so that my kids will never have to suffer the problems of being overweight and unhealthy. I love the new life I have. I think my wife would agree, too! I will never allow myself to go back to that old life.

I set my goal weight initially at 180 pounds. As of today, I am down to 184 lbs. I have no intentions of stopping what I am doing. I know that when my body reaches the point at which it should be, I will stop losing weight. From that point forward it will just be maintenance, since NutriSystem has definitely prepared me for a long life of healthy eating by teaching me about portion control, low-glycemic foods and variety. In addition, I have tried to incorporate exercises that I will be able to do the rest of my life, as well as a variety of activities that are fun for me and my family.

Anyone who is struggling with weight should give NutriSystem a try. The program is extremely easy to follow and will give you all the support that you need or want. This program leaves no guesswork.

I would like to thank NutriSystem for what they have done for my life. This program has been the launching pad to my new and improved life and to better health. Thank you, NutriSystem, for being there!

All You Need to Know About Raw Food Diet
By Riana D Lance

Many of dieters out there are trying this kind of diet. What is it, actually? What are the advantages and disadvantages? How to do it?
Let me help you get all the answers in the following detailed explanations about raw food diet before you decide to apply it:

• What is Raw Food Diet?
Raw food diet is a diet composed mainly or entirely of raw and living foods. These foods include mostly raw vegan food, such as fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds.

The raw foodists can consume any foods which have not been cooked, frozen, or treated with chemical preservatives.

There are 3 types of raw foodists:
1. Living foodists, who eat a diet made up of plant food in active form, such as sprouted nuts and seeds. 2. Juicarians, who eat a diet made up entirely of juices. 3. Raw foodists who are not vegetarians, and therefore eat raw meats and unpasteurized milk

• How to Start a Raw Food Diet?
Going on a raw food diet can be similar to detoxifying your body, and there can be some side effects. So when considering the raw food diet, you should start slowly, with one or more raw meals per day, and one or more meals with a raw main dish and a small cooked side dish. This can be easier on your body as well as your habits.

• Where to Find the Foods?
The best kind of raw food is organic food. Organic foods are now available in a wide variety of products, not just fruits but even cookies.

While organic foods can be more expensive then regular foods, they can also be more convenient, as there are many companies starting in cities that will actually deliver organic fruits and vegetables to your front door.

• What Are The Advantages?
Many raw foodists choose the diet because they believe that cooking, freezing or otherwise processing foods can destroy vitamins, bacteria, and enzymes. They also believe that cooking food makes food harder to digest, partially due to destroying enzymes which are acting as catalysts in the digestion of food.

Raw foods contain less chemicals and preservatives, which are not natural in foods. Raw food is also less toxic and more easily digested, while containing more vitamins and minerals than processed foods.

The raw foodists also believe that the diet can improve health, lower risk of heart disease (because of a diet low in trans-fats), improve digestion, improve skin appearance, and increase the energy levels.
• What Are The Disadvantages?

An important concern in a raw food diet is the lack of animal proteins. One needs to get all the essential amino acids.

To fulfill all the nutrition and avoid deficiencies in protein and vitamin B12, a raw foodist might need some nutritional supplements.

So, after you find out all you need to know about raw food diet, are you ready to start one now?

About the author: Riana Lance has a deep concern on health. That brings her to create essential tips on how to become healthier.

Nutrisystem Success Story – Jean Over 60 Woman

Rooted in a Healthier Life: Jean’s Story
66-year-old grandmother loses 93 lbs.*
nutrisystem Jean Jean Over 60 Nutrisystem Womens Diet

I grew up on a farm in Southeast Iowa. We raised dairy cattle, beef cattle, hogs, and chickens and grew most of our own fruits and vegetables. Dad also grew wheat, oats, corn, and beans. Mom canned a lot and froze a lot. We only went to town once a week or sometimes only once every two weeks. Mom would buy staples, like sugar, flour and seasonings at the grocery store. I would take the money I had to spend and go to the dime store and buy a bag of candy and sit in the park and eat it all. I looked forward to buying my bag of candy.

I was slim during my childhood (even though one of my favorite meals was fried chicken with mashed potatoes and gravy). In the summer, we did eat lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, including tomatoes from the garden, and in the winter we ate a lot of canned tomatoes that mom thickened with flour. Lard from butchered hogs was used in cooking and we made our own butter and then later bought it from the creamery we sold our cream to. So, as you can see, I grew up eating totally different than many people do now.

Hi, I’m Jean (“grannyroots” on the NutriSystem boards), a 66-year-old former eighth-grade science teacher and stay-at-home mom. I have been married to my husband Richard for 40 years, and have two daughters and two grandsons. I love being outside in my yard flower gardening and taking digital pictures of the birds and flowers in my yard. I am actively involved in my church and am currently writing a book about it, and I run my own website. This is my weight-loss story.

As a child and teenager I was of normal weight. I did not develop a weight problem until I had my daughters and had 20 pounds to lose. The program I used to lose that weight taught you to think of the things you should not eat as “illegal.” That wasn’t a good idea. After I had lost the weight and I could eat the “illegal” foods, I overate them and ballooned up to 60 pounds overweight. Worse, I developed a craving for sweets. I would call myself a sugarholic. By the end of 2004, I found myself weighing my heaviest ever—239 lbs. (I’m 5’4″).

Worse, I started developing health issues, which were at least in part due to my weight. I had two knee replacements five years ago; I am sure being 90+ pounds overweight increased my problems with my knees. Then in February 2005, I discovered that I had a fatty liver and was on the verge of a liver problem called NASH (Non-Alcoholic Steatohepatitis).

Plus, at around the same time, my husband Richard was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease—so I knew I had to be healthy in order to take care of him when he got worse. As you can see, I had many vital reasons why I needed to get the weight off.

That’s when I started NutriSystem—the only weight loss plan that worked for me. It took me 16 months, and in May of 2006 I reached my goal of 93 lbs.* lost.

I found some things to be challenging along the way: getting all my vegetables in, being prepared when I ate out, and handling the times I really wanted to binge (and maybe did). But the program made it easier. Having food that you can take with you and being able to prepare the food quickly was wonderful. I usually never leave the house to go shopping or to a meeting without at least some of these items: yogurt, a NutriSystem dessert, fruit and water. (I usually eat something every couple hours as I have some trouble with blood sugar dropping.) I also use the bulletin board, read the Daily Dose and like to read the profiles.

My family has been very supportive, too. In fact, my daughter and grandsons have sent me notes of encouragement from time to time like “Great job” or “We are proud of you.” The most recent was at Easter when my oldest grandson walked in the house and handed me a huge rabbit and balloon congratulating me on my weight loss.

It was all so worth it, as it is quite rewarding to look at myself in the mirror and like what I see—and feel much better about myself. Also, I like the positive comments I get and being treated nicer by people I meet. When you are overweight and middle-aged, you are not always treated well. But when you are at your normal weight and looking more attractive, you receive a lot more respect. People treat you better and are more likely to treat you as an intelligent human being. For example, when I’m out buying clothes and tell the clerks I have lost 93 pounds*, they at first are surprised and then I usually get asked a lot of questions about NutriSystem.

More important, my health is much better now. At my last checkup with the liver specialist, I was told if I maintain my weight loss I would not be at risk anymore for NASH, but if I put the weight back on the risk would return.

In addition, it’s much easier for me to bend over to work in my flowerbeds. Since I can no longer get down on my knees to garden due to my knee replacements, I must bend over to garden. Two years ago, I would have had to quit after about twenty minutes, go in the house and lie down because my lower back would hurt so badly. Now I can bend over much better and without my lower back hurting and, when needed, can even get on the ground. Best of all, I know that as long as I maintain my weight loss, I will stay healthy and be able to stay active for a much longer time. My flower garden beckons!

I’ve also had some funny experiences because of my weight loss. I’ve been asked several times if I have had plastic surgery to get rid of the excess flab around the middle, which makes me smile. Also, I was talking to a relative of my husband’s who had not seen me in two years, and she kept commenting on my new hairstyle. She kept looking at me as if she was trying to figure out what was different. After about the third compliment on my hair, I shared I had lost 93 pounds* since she last saw me. Her reply: “I knew something was different!”

I’ve learned a lot from NutriSystem, which will help me maintain my weight loss. I try to eat right and eat smaller portions, and also exercise more. If I have a bad day or two, I have learned to get back to eating right as quickly as possible. To increase my activity level, I walk more and I am doing stomach-toning exercises (and should have started them sooner). I am also eating some different foods now and I have learned that if you restrict how much you eat of a food that you crave, you will get over the craving and still not totally fall off the wagon.

My best advice to others would be that if you think too far ahead, it may be too big of a challenge—but taking one day at a time is not. Also, enter the program with the idea that you are going to make some permanent changes in your eating habits and are not just getting the weight off and then planning to go back to your old eating habits. My journey was sixteen months and if you take it one day at a time, you will make it, too.

—Jean

What Do You Need To Know About Senior’s Health
Author: Mansi Gupta

As one progresses in age, he retreats in health or fitness. Though senior citizens are counseled to stay fit, it is barely the case like. Numerous natural transformations occur in the body as it moves towards fragility. For instance, the bones and muscles lose their potential reducing the stamina of the body, the kidneys and other internal organs start malfunctioning and the vigor of the skin recedes.

But the fact is that health is wealth at every stage of life. It is more crucial when one enters into the senior citizens category because there are few caretakers in those times. So, the elderly should concentrate on fitness as much as possible. There are quite a few ways in which the aged can enjoy a good physical and mental health.

1. Health Insurance- it is the first and foremost requirement of every senior citizen. A medical insurance is the greatest friend in the time of need. It can provide you and your family the financial aid in worst times of your life. But one should be pretty careful in purchasing a health care policy. The plan that facilitates maximum benefits should be taken up.

2. Diet and Exercise- the diet of individual varies with the age along with other factors. But at an older age, a person should be extra careful in matters of eating. This is because, the antibodies or the immunity system receives a setback in this age and one becomes more prone to all sorts of illnesses. The diet therefore should be thriving in vitamins, minerals, proteins and carbohydrates. Fats should be strictly avoided as they make one susceptible to numerous diseases particularly heart problems. There must be an extra intake of calcium to support the diluting bones. But a rich diet is not enough. Some exercises should be a part of daily routine in this age. Individuals need to be extra cautious about movements of their limbs for the natural strength and the disease fighting ability of the body keeps on retiring in older ages.

3. Those who have a family history of ailments like prostrate and colon cancer, the diseases that most likely hit men in fifties and above, should get regular medical check ups done. They must follow the doctor’s advice and all the injunctions and prohibitions.

4. Women are more likely to be affected by breast cancer. They also are vulnerable to other diseases due to menopause. Though the course of destiny can never be averted yet prevention should never be ignored. There are some medicines that women should take after menopause in order to minimize the risk factor.

5. Alzheimer’s disease and Dementia are even threatening for women. The former is a fall in certain cognitive brain functions. It is a type of dementia. Dementia impedes an individual’s intellectual functioning and capability to work. These diseases mostly affect women in sixties and above that.Such women gradually become forgetful and incompetent in doing skilful work. As soon as some of these symptoms are evident, doctor should be consulted without delay. Drugs at early stage might stop the situation from worsening.

6. Avoid stress. Stress is as harmful as any other contagious disease. Don’t stoop to drugs so called stress busters. Consult a psychiatrist if conditions run out of control.
